Each step that is taken, is within the Mt. Baker Wilderness area, on the ancestral territory of the Nooksack, Upper Skagit, Samish, Sauk-Suiattle, and Stillaguamish Tribes, with the Lummi people holding a significant connection to the mountain, known as "Komo Kulshan" - translates to "white, shining mountain" or "great white watcher.
And while we weren't necessarily running on Mt. Baker that day, the region had a presence that was felt like it was watching over us.

Amongst the green moss, the pines, and cedar, the wildflowers laying their leaves to rest, or the wild blueberries making their final appearance, but from the smiles of realizing that we were all climbing our own mountains that day.
Pride flags are on hats and on patches stuck to running vests. It’s not about running, it’s about cheering each other on at the top of a big climb, because for some it was their first time too. What I come to learn is that these landscapes bring out the best in you, and maybe even the most vulnerable parts too. Sharing deep stories with people with each step forward was grounded in lightness and trust. The alpine region is a place I haven’t ran before, but it’s sparks inspiration. I feel grateful for creativity, whether by wearing it or bringing it home, and sharing it with others. Life can bring colour in so many ways!!
